Fit for a Queen - Dubonnet and Gin

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II has certainly brought us to an end of an era. It is wildly reported that her cocktail of choice was a Dubonnet and Gin. Dubonnet is a fortified wine blended with spices and other flavors similar to vermouths. It is sweeter and more berry forward than a typical sweet vermouth, and has similar notes to a light red wine.

Traditionally 2 parts Dubonnet to 1 part Gin, this cocktail is simple and timeless. We used Beefeater Gin in honor of the Queen’s Guard (the Beefeater on the label depicts the Yeomen of the Guard). Beefeater is also a great British Gin that has the classic juniper forward flavor of gin which stands up well to the sweetness of the Dubonnet.

Some tips and trixx:

  • This cocktail is a stirred cocktail and not shaken. Stirring not only gets the cocktail cold but also dilutes it slightly to bring out the flavors. Shaking adds air into the mix which will dampen the smoothness of the cocktail, so best to stir.

  • Chill your glasses prior to mixing up the cocktails. You’ll find this in our typical tips for all coupe and martini glasses. It’s so easy to do and adds that little bit something extra.

  • This garnish is simple with fresh sliced lemon. Squeeze a little of the juice into the cocktail to add a nice fresh pop of flavor that balances nicely with the flavors of the drink.
