Aperol Spritz

The Aperol Spritz is a drink with a lot of history originating in Venetia region of Italy during the House of Habsburg rule. Per stories, the soldier, merchants, diplomats and other visitors from the Habsburg empire, they became custom to drinking local wine of the land, but were not used to the local types of wine and the alcohol content was much higher than wine in their homeland of Austria. They would ask for the wine to have a dash of water in it, and thus the “spritz” was born.

At the time just bitters were used with water and wine for the “Spritz.” Aperol was then created in 1919, but was not popular for Spritz drinks until after the World War II caught on. It was recorded in the 1970s that the Aperol Spritz was to use Prosecco instead of regular wine.
